So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.

Right, he almost walked away, but then he didn't. He took a moment where he thought it was domestic violence, and he thought about when that was him, when he was the abuser, and he was conflicted. He thought about his past, his present, and the man he wants to be one day, and you know what he did? He went and did something. He decided to put his past behind him, to atone for the abuse he himself had once perpetrated, and ultimately, became an even better hero for it. What's wrong with that?

That’s a lot of conjecture, unless you’ve seen/heard/read some interview that I haven’t. Because from what I’ve read, it sounds like he was condoning domestic violence and only intervened when he realized that a lot more was going on. If all you’re saying is true and he really has said all that, regretting and wanting to atone for his past, then great. But I have not heard any of that and while I applaud him for taking action when others would have walked away and recognize the bravery that it took to do what he did, it disgusts me how so many people seem to think that domestic violence is a “private” matter and not the outright awful crime that it is.
